Opening Day HDLR Re-Do: Jays Versus Yankees

Hi Everyone, and welcome to Heartland Digital Living Room, where the beverages are always cold and fresh, the hot dogs are always cheap and tasty, and the chin-wagging is always fast and furious.  Tonight the Yankees attempt to play their first game of the year with a re-scheduled Opening Day game against the Blue Jays.  Roy Halliday will face Chien-Ming Wang in a match-up of very good right-handed pitchers.  There seem to be scattered showers in the area, according to weather.com, but they seem scattered enough to allow for baseball tonight--hopefully.

I believe that the Yankees will usher out the same lineup they would have yesterday, which would be as follows:

Johnny Damon LF
Derek Jeter SS
Bobby Abreu RF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Jason Giambi 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada C
Hideki Matsui DH
Melky Cabrera CF

Cano's batting sixth reflects Girardi's confidence in him and, as Josh at The Sommer Frieze mentioned, book-ending Cano with two slower but certainly more patient hitters is a very good move.  Imagine how many teams could actually have a batter in Matsui, the DH no less, batting eighth who has hit for more than 100 RBI in every full season he's played.  Only the Yankees.  This is a special lineup.

Yet Halliday is no walk in the park.  It's tough to work him over because he throws a lot of strikes, and he throws a good, tempting sinking fastball.  Don't be surprised to see more batters than usual swinging early in the count because Halliday can get even good batters behind in the count and fast.  He'll be a very good test for the Yankees' potent lineup.

I'm working on a pot of chili, and will be in and out for the ninety or so minutes before the game.  Come on in, grab a digital leather recliner, and enjoy the game, everyone.

Let's Go, Yankees!

Jason is in.

Hey, Jason!

I'm watching on YES !!! ....It looks like a nice night, and a lot warmer than yesterday !!! I just listed a new post. So, see you there [and, here]...Go Yankees .....Jimmy

Hey Jimmy, thanks for checking in. I'll also go by BY&L.

FFTD checking in nd hattting the new mlblogs site. I apparently "don't have permission to comment this blog" but I hope this comment goes through.

Vanessa, you're in. How the heck have you been? How's school?

Wang is looking good thus far.

I have goood. School has been terrible. It gets worse every year lol, but baseball is BACK as my savior :)

been good*

Cheap infield single for Stewart, the ball just died.

Nice piece of hitting from Rios. That ball was down, but not too much in. Good to hear, Vanessa.

Nice play by Cano, DP. How have u been Jason?

Horrible base-running by Rios helps Yankees get out of the jam, Zeros. Nice play by Cano to double Rios off first with the leaping grab.

Everything's been well, Vanessa. I'm busy with dissertation writing and research, the family has been well--all good.

Damon looked bad that at-bat. Get things going, Captain.

That 0-2 pitch to Jeter just missed outside, now 2-2.

Swinging bunt by Jeter, two down. Get it started, BA.

Wow, dissertation. You going for your doctorate?
The Yanks havent gotten anything started yet but I have to say how much I loove Opening Day, it should be a holiday.

Abreu singled, nice. Keep it rolling, A-Rod.

Way to start off the season! Arod still has it.

I am indeed going for a Ph.D. Hard work, but worthwhile.

A-Rod!! Picking up where he left off, 1-0 with a double to the right-center wall. Outstanding. If this team can score with 2 outs, look out.

Yeah, where was Rios going? [on that DP] ...Good inning for Wang!

First hit of season for Yankees.....Base Hit - Bobby Abreu...A-Rod...beautiful double to right-center.....Run Scores...1-0 Yankees

A-Rod sure does still have it, Vanessa. 1-0 is good against a pitcher of Halliday's quality.

I bet it's extreme hard work, and here I'm complaining about high school lol. What are you trying to get your Ph.D. in?

Thomas singles through the hole to left.

US History, with a specialty in Labor and Working-Class History.

1st and 3rd, one out. another DP ball would be fortuitous here.

Wow, that's interesting. I'm taking U.S. history is school right now, and I've never been good at history but thankfully I have an awesome history teacher this year.
Wang not running too smoothly, has given up four hits so far. I hoped he would at least start off the game strong. Cmon, sit em down Wang.

3-6 on a slow grounder ties the game. Wang hasn't been too sharp, but he's also been hurt by cheap tappers.

Is it just me or has Giambi seriously improved his defense, niice dish to Jeet.

History is much better when well-taught, and boring when not.

Set him down, Wang, and get the bats back out there.

That was another broken bat hit vs. Wang....The Yankees gave Overbay a lot of room down the 3rd base line....

And, Giambi looked good on the slow grounder that scored the Jay's run...1-1

Jeter should have kept the tag on him, for Scutaro slid past the bag.

Nice scoop, Giambi, three down, 1-1. Start it hot, Robbie C.

Yeah, tell me about it. I had boring history teacher for my first year and an extremely strict witch of a teacher my second year, and I honestly can't remember anything I learned those years.

Yes !!! Jason Giambi !!! Nice catch on throw in the dirt for final out - (6-3).....We need Giambi to have a great year [at the plate, and in the field] !!!

It's so weird seeing Girardi as the manager. He looks to young to be at the helm. I'm too used to seeing Torre, but I think he's a good fit for this team.

Sorry, start it hot, Jorge.

Robinson Cano, don't you know !!! First hit on his way to a .400 season !!!

I agree, Vanessa. He'll be very good for the Yankees. Different, but good. Jorge rips one, but 3-6-3 DP makes two down. Matsui out, three down quickly.

Yes Giambi needs to step it up this year. He can't just be the DH. Matsui and Damon looks to be filling that spot this year again, as I'm sure the Yanks will try and give Cabrera as much time as possible on the field.

What was wrong with that first pitch to Eckstein?

I think so too, Vanessa. Nice slider K's Eckstein, one down.

Nice play by Cano to get it down.

4-3 on one pitch, two down.

Wang looked extra careful on the BB to Rios. I can't say I blame him.

That jump throw by Jeet never gets old.

Wang is keeping his pitches down tonight...The Jays really haven't hit him hard....On to the bottom of the 3rd we go...

Jays 1, Yankees 1

Start things off, Melky the Clutch.

I had to get my son out of the bath, so I missed Jeter's jump throw. The Yankees have hit the ball hard, but with little to show for it.

Except for Damon, who has started slowly against Halliday.

Nice base hit by the Capt'n

I don't get tired of Jeter's inside-out swing. Keep it rolling BA.

Ahh... caught trying to steal.

Jeter caught stealing ends the inning. He had a lower percentage of bases stolen last year. I hope he improves on that this year.

On your earlier point, Vanessa, I do hope that Girardi finds it possible to rotate Giambi to the DH now and then. It will rest him, and get the others some time as well.

First-pitch 6-3, one out. Keep it up, Wang.

Wang is hitting spots now, he threw that one inside right where Jorge wanted it.

Greattt play by Cabrera. Precisely the reason why he needs to be in center.

Excellent catch, Melky!! Robs Overbay of a double to right-center. Clutch.

ANOTHER ONE!! Melky steals one again.

Melky doubles up on the defense, robbing Hill with a great diving catch. Way to go, kid!!

Melky's judgments and angles in center are sometimes suspect, but he's been outstanding tonight. What a defensive asset.

BA is 2-2, roping a single to right. Great start. Keep it rolling, A-Rod. Send one out of here.

Aghh, another DP not in the Yankees favor.

Well, 6-4-3 erases that, two down. Giambi makes it easy woth a come-backer, the game is going quickly.

I hope O'neill will do more broadcasts this year. I miss him.

Halliday is really tough right now. They might need to work the count a bit more. Halliday has only thrown 42 pitches.

I do too, Vanessa. he's a nice complement to Kay.

Walk to that stinking Scutaro.

O'Neill makes a good point about wang's need to bust lefties in. Zaun made him pay. 1st and 3rd, no outs.

I finally found your comments on my Blog, Jason....You are listing on yesterdays opening day post...I listed a new post just before the start of tonight's game....

Anyway, Wang is in trouble...Runners on 1st and 3rd...No Outs!!!!.....Again, soft grounder to first...Runner held up at third....One Out !...runners at 2nd and 3rd...we need a big K.....

Wang has had only one 1-2-3 inning i believe but has still managed to keep the score low. That kind of grinding it out is something the Yanks deffinitely didnt have last year.

5-3 scores the runt Scutaro, 2-1 Jays.

Ball hit too slowly down third to try and get the runner at the plate! Only play was to first....2-1 Jays !

Big K of Rios on a sinker. Start things off, RC! Big inning here after the Jays scored.

Beautiful pitch by Wang....For the STRIKEOUT !!!!....to end the inning !

Jorge is starting to make Halliday work. Make it pay, Jorge.

Jorge fanned on the knuckle-curve, two down. Cano in his at-bat chased a ball. Start it off, Matsui.

Posada goes down with the strikeout. Halladay has the Yanks in the palm of his hands. It'd be nice to see some firepower from the Yanks.

Eckstein played Matsui just right, three down. Halliday again facses the minimum.

Nice range by A-Rod on Wells's grounder, 5-3 one out.

Wang is rolling now, 6-3 on Thomas, two down.

1-2-3 for Wang. Now, time for the bats to show up.

4-3, three down. Wang has pitched quite well. Let's get some runs, guys.

Right there with you, Vanessa.

So Vanessa, are you contemplating certain colleges?

MELK delivers again, first the glove, now the bat. HR

Melky the Clutch!! Melky the Clutch!! After a great at-bat, Melky barely hits that out to right. Huge, tying the game at 2.

Now that's what you call an at-bat!!!! Melky!!!!!!!

That ball was BARELY out, but they don't put asterisks next to them. Out is out.

3U, one down with Jeter coming up. Work your way on base, Captain, and keep the line rolling.

Ehh... kind of. Everyone is talking about college and we've going to see some, but I feel like it's years away. I don't know if I entirely want to go, even though I know it's "what's best".

HOMERUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Melk-man DELIVERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quite an opener thus far, eh?

Melk couldn't get that one, but it would have been unbelievable if he did.

Tough play on Melky in center, though that's one he'll eventually learn to judge.

Giambino is flashing that leather this year.

Nice reflexes by The Big G, one down Hill still at second.

Boogie-Down J!! Welcome aboard. Give the boy Cooper a big smooch for me.

6-3, two down. Not bad for the "worst shortstop in the game."

second worst ;)

These guys are playing a solid defense game. Total opposite of last year. Didn't Jete have 3 errors and A-Rod a dropped pop up. They're doing a stellar job. Good outing by the Wanger. What was up with all the sawed off lumber??

J-Boogie

Melky is on fire...Almost another great catch!!! But, a great diving attempt....He was flying through the air, trying to catch that ball !!! Way To Go, Melky !!!

I like that Girardi wanted to get a close look at Wang. He's thrown 91 pitches, now 92 with the 5-3. I like Girardi showing trust in Wang and how well he's thrown. He could start the 8th with a pitch count of 92, and Scutaro is a righty (though one who has troubled Wang tonight). I think Wang will pitch to Scutaor, then we'll see because Zaun switch-hits.

No doubt, J, lots of wasted lumber tonight.

Will do Jason. Of all nights for Cooper to throw a fit at bedtime it had to be Opening Day. God bless DVR. I watched much of the 1st half in fast forward.

C'mon, A-Rod!!

Base hit by the reigning MVP

C'mon, A-Rod!! yes, single to right-center.

Keep it rolling, Big G!

2-0, good patience from Big G.

Bruney warming up in the pen. What is with his long locks? Don't the Yanks have the no long hair rule?

Joba and Bruney up in the pen.

Pedro Martinez was injured in the Met game tonight....On a pitch he was throwing to the plate, he pulled something !!!

Bruney lost weight and gained hair.

BB, 1st and 2nd, no outs for Robbie C. Big moment here.

I like that Girardi ran A-Rod on 3-2 with no outs. I liek the aggressiveness.

Niiiiice baserunning by Giambi, scratch the would be double play.

Great play by Giambi to stay out of the DP, then to get in safely to second, 2nd and 3rd, one out.

IBB to Jorge. Drive the ball, Matsui!

Amen, Vanessa.

Yanks take the lead on a mistake by Hill.

Great play by Giambi leads to the go-ahead run!!! Yanks 3-2.

4-6 force scores A-Rod, 3-2 Yankees, two down. C'Mon, Melky the Clutch.

4-6 force scores A-Rod, 3-2 Yankees, two down. C'Mon, Melky the Clutch.

Ouch, Melk strikes out and Halladay still whines.

3-2 is very good. Insert Joba here.

Joba coming into the game and theres no bugs stopping him tonight.

Give 'em the heavy gas, Joba.

I know the plan is for Joba to be a starter, and I'd love to see that day, but right about now, he just looks like a reliever. He has almost as great as a jog in as Mo.

It's Joba time !!!

4-3, one down on three pitches.

Nice outing by the Wanger. Wasn't overly sharp but the D picked him up. I'm pleased.

Joba pumps in the first-pitch strike to Rios at 97 MPH.

1-2, set him down, Joba.

Lost Rios from 1-2 for a BB. Need to get Wells, DO would e even better.

Wang sharpened up in the last three innings, it seemed.

I think Joba may be a little too amped up. Hope it he shuts it down.

Joba is only topping out at 94 right now.

Backwards K of Well, but Rios stole second, two down.

KKKKKKK! Joba fist pump!

0-1 fastball to Thomas from Joba painted the corner, now 0-2.

Joba's gas set down Thomas, big K!!

Let's get some insurance.

STRIKEOUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joba Rules !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joba's got lots of emotion, and I'd like to see him not fun it in anyone. But he channels that emotion into his pitching so well. Terrific 8th inning.

I'd love to see some insurance runs here.

Joba rules!! And Damin is a quick SOB. He gets the triple and I forget who it was from Toronto that only picks up a 2B on pretty much the same play.

I know they say the pitcher shouldn't let out that emotion b/c its insulting the other player, but its fun to see that. Pitchers kinda look like robots when they don't show anything.

Triple by JD!

Damon triples to lead off, score that run, Captain.
