HDLR 4/13/08: Yankees @ Red Sox

Hi everyone, and welcome to the Heartland Digital Living Room where the hot dogs and chicken wings are always fresh, the beverages are always cold, and the chin-wagging is always fast and furious.  Tonight, the Yankees go for the series win against Boston.  Phil Hughes (0-1, 5.00 ERA) faces Matsuzaka (2-0, 1.47 ERA) in the series finale tonight in what should be cold, damp temperatures.  Jeter will sit the series finale and hopefully will be healthy soon, although Alberto Gonzales has been a good fill-in.  As per Pete Abraham, the line-ups are posted below; note Ortiz is not playing tonight.  Come on in, grab a digital leather recliner and a cold one, and enjoy the game.  Let's Go, Yankees!

Hi Jason its Nick_K I gonna watch the game even though I will only get 1 hour sleep

i missed half of your "phoner" on the fan club because i went to get a cup of coffee :(

nick, how can we be in two places at once?

Nick, you're the man. Mike, the second half of my message was on whether there is a positive that the Yanks are 6-6 with so little offense, which will hit; and on how long Giambi can stay in there with him hurting the team so badly as a johnny one-note. I don't think you missed much since they covered some of that earlier.

i heard the second half J. i would never get up in the middle of your "piece". i missed the first part

BTW, the guys, especially Uncle Joe, were all fired up.

it took the uncle a while to get going...too distracted by the masters....

Hi.

Boggs is on BBTN

It was funny when Ty got on him for watching during the show, asking him to rejoin the show.

What's going on, Joe?

I'm eating like a king this weekend. My wife has cheesy ham and scalloped potatoes in the oven right now--heavy on the ham and cheese. [Rubbing stomach]

yes, i enjoyed that too j

They really have a good show, lots of smarts and energy.

Not much is going on. Just waiting for the game to start. I had to fill in the time today by eating, breathing etc.

How about school, Joe. Are you going?

not now

Mike, Jason you know I'm going to Vegas on Wednesday. I have a mate lives in Orange County he just emailed me I have somewhere to stay.

Sorry for my geography but is the Angels in Orange county

it sounds a lot like my day joe...that and some typing...

He lives in Huntington Beach I think

yes the angels are in anaheim , right in orange county off of interstate highway 5.

orange county is rather large tho...

That's cool, and a few hours drive to Vegas. Are you going to catch a baseball game Nick?

I will try and catch the Angles

Greg Maddux got his 349th win today, amazing. It was a shutout.

huntington beach is right down highway 57 from anaheim stadium. you're very close

it's a fun stadium, the crowd gets into it. and they are playing well . you guys will have a great time..also the tickets are cheap there

Joe, how concerned are you about Ortiz's slump?

IS huntington beach like is Newport in the oc tv show

it is nearby...

Not too concerned, it shouldnt keep up. Unless something is seriously wrong, but from the sound of things that I have read he seems to be OK physically.

I wish BBTN could find some analysts worth watching. Maybe a stat guy could get thrown in, but I doubt he would mesh with the other guys.

that show has gotten worse and worse...i still like seeing the clips. thats why i watch, not for the "commentary"

You're right, Joe. It's not a good show. To be honest, it's always only been decent, but listening to Kruk and Phillips (when he's on) is like listening to nails on a blackboard. They're horrible, and not analytical.

I will be on both blogs Jasons and Sommers. Both great blogs.

Olney and Kurkjian are better, and I thought Harold Reynolds was pretty good until he was apparently fired for allegations of sexual harassment. They ditched Tino after a year, Orestes Destrade isn't very articulate, and they lack good analysts among the ex-players. It's too bad. Plus, Berman's act got lame about 15 years ago.

Many thanks for the kind words, Nick.

I used to love watching BBTN before I had MLB TV. Because then I could only watch the nationally televised Sox games. So when I watched the show it was to see highlights from the Red Sox that I had not seen at all. I also liked Hrold Reynolds. But I was in high school I wonder if I would still like him now...

I think Reynolds worked well with Gammons, providing different perspectives that meshed well.

On the whole I like Gammons. But listening to him saying "Red Sox Nation" reinforces just how lame RSN and all its gimmickry really is.

Need to start the game with some runs. JD, warm it up from the awful start thus far.

Anyone watch that Phils Cubs game? Chase utley didnt hustle on his double could have had a triple. Which wouldnt have mattered much. But a past ball would have scored him.

FFTD checkin in.

yes, drive dice -k away early if possible

How's it going, Vanessa?

i watched 90 % of that game joe. yes, you're right, he didn't hustle. i saw that play.

This game is on TV in the UK so thats how i'm gonna watch it mlb tv slow down my computer

i'm surprised it's on TV over there Nick

Good eye JD, 3-1.

hey vanessa

this SLOW website is killing me..

dice-bb tonight we hope

Lead-off BB, nice. How about the first Yankees stolen base of the year?

lead off walk from damon

hey mike. i hope the bats break out tonight.

Hit-and-run, but fouled off.

There is a channel called 5ive they show baseball on sundays night (espn sunday nights baseball)

Control Dice K! Who are you Nolan Ryan!

This is a weird being on 2 blog but I like it

not the best at bat robbie..

Morgan's an idiotm saying that there aren't base stealers in the lineup. Abreu, A-Rod, Melky...

Cano lunges for a ball, F8, one down.

Finally a stolen base, now a good single here, BA.

first steal by damon

he's also usually unprepared as well J-

stolen base!

Morgan was probably just trying to say that they dont have a guy who is going to steal 60 like he could :)

Four-pitch BB to BA. Plate those runners, A-Rod.

Why boo A-Rod

just as i was typing that the yanks are starting it off right.... dp.

we must take advantage of this.

oh dammit arod!

Damn it Alex

Nice going A-Rod, swinging on the first pitch to a guy who couldn't throw a strike, and letting him off the hook. STUPID.

Well Dicek looked rough but he got out of it. Did anyone notice what pitch that was?

how utterly idiotic to swing when a guy cant throw strikes. jeeez

It looked like a slider Joe.

I completely agree Jason. Why are the Yankee hitters continually going after the first pitch.... it's not working.

Hughes has to locate the fastball.

5 straight fastballs.

lead off walk for the sox

Does anyone else's IE browser mess up and say "this page cannot be displayed" continuously with MLBlogs?

hughes has thrown all fastballs.

Thats was really bad

Bad all around--bad pitchout from Hughes, bad throw from Molina, and horrible missed catch from Gonzales gives Ellsbury third.

i use safari joe, but the page loads terribly slowly and i also get errors.

that throw was beyond bad

Hughes looks like he did on the second start

Yakker gets Pedroia, one out, and he knew it.

joe morgan "not sure" if it was a strike

Nice pitch by Hughes. I love when pitchers go off speed in full counts

this doesn't bode well...

4 pitch walk for drew

Four-pitch BB to Drew, odd parallel to the top of the first.

Matsuzaka threw exactly five strikes in the first.

a dp would be sweet right about now.

21 pitches so far for hughes

No doubt, Vanessa.

Hanging curve, 1-0 Red Sox. Nice going A-Rod, a study in twp contrasting approaches. Ramirez worked the count for an RBI, A-Rod screwed up on the first pitch.

Sac fly, 2-0 Boston.

I think we are gonna need the pen a bit sooner then we thought

well they are well rested at least nick

hughes up on 29 pitches already.

indeed, but manny did swing at the first pitch as well.

Not good

Hughes looks terrible, and it's about time that he and Molina stop throwing only fastballs. They looks like idiots.

see, the yanks could've had this big of an inning if they worked the pitcher.

nick , this inning may still be going on by the time you have to go to work

But Mike, Hughes's first pitch was a fastball down Broadway. Matsuzaka's was a pitch down, not a good pitch to hit.

ohlendorf already?! give hughes a chance

you're right.

yikes.

This getting pathetic by this rate Hughes will be lucky to get to the 3rd

Hughes and Molina need to get their stinking act together. The cross-up led to a wild pitch and gave Ramirez the run, 3-0. Stinking horrible.

.... another run. Mixed signals between Molina & Hughes. At least the curve had a lot of movement.

poor phil. it's a tough crowd there

I feel as if I have been saying this for that last 12 games but WAKE UP BATS

Hughes threw 39 pitches in the first. Horrible. Matsui needs to get things started for the Yankees, make Matsuzaka work right back and give Hughes a blow.

If this turns in to another quick 1-2-3 I'm gonna go crazy

i doubt that the blame falls on molina, he's pretty experienced

I agree Nick. I hope they at least wait till the second pitch to swing.

Nick, you're not alone.

it's ok nick, we've all been saying that the last 12 games...

Lead off walk for Matsui

nice at bat by matsui. way to start it off.

now THAT is the kind of at-bat we're looking for!

Good eye, Matsui, BB to start the second. Keep it going, Jorge.

Is it me or does Jorge look a bit uncomfortable.

I hate to say it, but I agree with Morgan. Posada got a 3-1 pitch grooved and took it. Then he popped out behind home. What a colossal waste of an at-bat.

he looks a little tentative, yeah

first pitch balls suck

How about a base hit, Big G? You're due.

good point J

Maybe cause its late over hear but I am getting so frustrated with this offence.

Giambi is a waste of a bat in this line up

F7 shallow, two down. Molina, get something going.

and that sucked as well

frustrated is a understatement

i think we're all pretty frustrated

This is really pathetic

well that inning was a bummer.

hey, what if we were tiger fans?

see, it could be worse...right?

nice play

This starts reminds me of a great discussion from "Cheers:"

Woody: How's it going Mr. Peterson?
Norm: Pour.
Woody: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Peterson.
Norm: [pointing to the tap] No, POUR!

can't catch a break.

Crisp was out.

lol, true Mike.

HA!

Bang-bang, but the ball was there first.

nothing going are way

Maybe one day Lugo will do something productive...

5-3 moves Crisp to third.

i just love these long lectures from joe morgan

Umpiring have been so bad for the Yanks

And that doesnt count. He didnt strike out, I guess if you want to count that as productive.

AG!

I see that over-the-shoulder basket catches run in the Yankees shortstop family.

it was better than nothing joe...

Well it was good baserunning by Crisp. The credit goes to him

the little munchkin is angry!
