Yankees versus Marlins; Blue Jays-Yankees Pitching Match-Ups

Tonight's lineups, as per Pete Abraham:

YANKEES
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Posada C
Cano 2B
Duncan DH
Cabrera CF

Pitching
Mussina

MARLINS
Ramirez SS
Uggla 2B
Jacobs 1B
Willingham LF
Gonzalez RF
Cantu 3B
Wood DH
Treanor C
De Aza CF

Pitching
Miller

I'd like to see the offense awaken from its recent slumber, Mussina pitch well, and no injuries occur. Also via Abraham, below are the pitching match-ups for the opening series between the Jays and the Yankees:

Monday 3/31, 1:05 p.m. YES/ESPN: Roy Halliday versus Chien-Ming Wang
Wednesday 4/2, 7:05 p.m. YES/ESPN2: A.J. Burnett versus Mike Mussina
Thursday 4/3, 7:05 p.m. YES: Dustin McGowan versus Phil Hughes

I'll provide some analysis of the Jays' pitchers over the weekend.  All three have given the Yanks problems at various times.

Enjoy the game tonight.

Infield hit for Posada, the second hit and infield hit for the Yanks, one out. There are loud "Let's Go, Yankees!" chants echoing throughout the stadium right now. Cano walks, a very good sign, first and second with one out. Miller has fallen behind Duncan who crushes one to deep left out but Posada tags, two outs. Melky swing at the first pitch which was out of the strike zone and, though it was a foul ball, Miller has had to work a ton and Melky nearly let him off the hook; terrible. 6-4 force ends it anyway, three down. Miller has thrown over 30 pitches--31 I believe.

hey J, i'm itting in the airport liteing to the game and i ee you're here...my flight i very delayed...i wa uppoed to leave 2 hours ago

i hear abreu jut saved the day

In the bottom of the second, Mussina has Willingham 0-2 and got him with a HBP. Gonzales singles to right, first and third no outs. Sac fly to center makes it 1-0 Marlins. 6-3 on a slow grounder to Jeter, Gonzales to second. Abreu made a terrific backhand running catch to rob Treanor of at least a double, and the Marlins of a run, 1-0 Marlins.

it's hard to keep the mrlkman from hacking away...

That stinks, Mike, I'm sorry to hear that. Do you have time to grab a cold one there and hunker down in the HDLR?

JD up, the Yanks need to stop leaving people on base (3 LOB through 2), ground-rule double for JD.

now that you mention it i am rather parched, but i am so cozily ensconced in my little corner here with a plug for the computer...
jeter doubles

oh was that damon?

ok so Now jeter get his double

Jeter doubles to right, 1-1 tie. Great hitting, I was telling the computer screen, "Hit it the other way Jeter to advance the runner," and he did that and more. Outstanding.

Abreu advances Jeter to third, one out, nice.

finally abreu starts listening to u J

a-rod!

A-Rod doubles down left, 2-1 Yankees with the echoes of "Let's Go, Yankees!" chants, I love it.

c'mon big G...

The Yankees need to do the right things, the things the late 1990s Yanks did--clutch base hits, advancing runners--team baseball.

i jut got the news...not boarding for another 30 min...

That's plenty of time for a cold coldie.

glad you've got the tavern open j

Giambi K's, two down, but at least they're making Miller work--47 pitches through 2 2/3.

The HDLR gin mill is a cash cow.

Jorge K's, three down, but 2-1 Yanks. Really good inning--three doubles.

loews...lets build something together...

moose doesn't field quickly enough...something he's usually good at

De Aza lays down a bunt single near third.

BTW, have you seen the new Gameday window, Mike? It's excellent, with lots of integrated features.

ye, i was admiring it before i checked in on you...nice that they include the box score

Loews, let's build anti-unionism together.

hilarious!

De Aza stole second, sac fly (unofficial) advances him to third.

the people around me are looking at me wondering why i'm laughing...

nice to hear mooe getting those breaking balls over for strikes

Uggla's single to right ties the game.

Moose--33 pitches/23 strikes, really good ratio.

it'd be nice to think moose could beat the marlins, wouldn't it

Mike Jacobs homered to right-center, 4-2 Marlins. So much for that lead. Waldman said that was a breaking ball.

but now that seems too much to hope for...

my first feelings of apprehension for the season

This staff has questions. Thankfully other teams--Boston, Detroit, Angels--do as well.

thank you melky for ending that ...

oh, that was only the second out

now another hour delay...at least...
f***

Gonzales thrown out at second, mercifully ending the third. Mussina had to throw 20 pitches in the frame.

Why the delay, Mike--bad weather? I'd DEFINITELY grab a brew if I were you.

Get things going, Shelley.

Duncan singles to right-center on cue.

Melky swings at the first pitch, easing the burden on Miller for the second out. HORRIBLE.

JD takes it the other way right after I requested it, doubling to make it second and third. I love to see the hitters taking the ball the other way.

A couple ducks here, Captain.

LOUD "Let's Go, Yankees!" chants now, and the home crowd has to boo in their own stadium just to tamp it down.

windy at laguardia...they claim...i never believe anything from a corporate entity...

Lots of boos at the 2-2 fastball inside, love the home crowd in Florida.

I don't either, except from the Yankees.

5-3 nabs Jeter to end the Yankees' half of the fourth, leaving two more on base.

i wish sterling wouldn't get so excited about a good play by them...pass the green tea please...

Mike, are you stuck in Alabama, or in a layover?

bham...it's a direct flight for whatever that's worth at this point...thank goodness for the internet...

F8 deep, one down.

i just e mailed you a picture of the forlorn plane sitting outside the window...

Jeter makes an over-the-shoulder catch, two down. Jeter's the worst shortstop in the game.

jeets! (the worst ss of all time...or at least francona's ever seen )

great minds jason...great minds

Backwards K to end the 4th, nice job by Mussina.

I'm sure that will occur another five thousand times this year, Mike.

Sorry to do this to you, Mike, but I'm destroying a piece of leftover cake--Bailey's Irish Cream Cake. It's outstanding.

i hope so

Abreu K's for the second time.

OMG that sounds really delicious, i love baileys...where did u get it?

abreu strikes out...

I Phone tells me picture delivery to you failed...so much for technology...

There is a local bakery that makes these superior cakes, pies and cheesecakes. It's incredibly good, and leftover from my wife's birthday.

A-Rod just plastered one, 4-3 Marlins. Trade him while he has at least a little value.

i've been waiting for the a-bomb call!!!

Giambi with a bloop single. Sterling just referred to Canseco as a "nincompoop." Classic.

Jorge with a hard line-out, two down. C'mon, RC.

local bakeries are a dying breed unfortunately...

thanks sam walton or whatever his name was...

a word from a bygone era...like the bakery...

ok shelley , knock them in for me...

That's a great at-bat from Cano, working a walk after being behind 0-2 and chasing a first-pitch breaking ball outside. That kid is POISED for a great year.

Plate the run(s), Duncan.

Miller is up to 90 pitches, that's a lot in the 5th.

Drat

They've made Miller work, but have 8 LOB. They need to cut that down and score them.

that kid isn't our problem...we'll probably never face him again until he's a star and they trade him...

i saw him pitch in one of his college games actually

Mussina--60 pitches, 40 strikes. That third has really hurt, but he's been good otherwise.

Three up, three down, Mussina has been sharp the last two innings. Score runs, boys.

ok so, that was a good inning!

this airport is like a deserted wasteland...even at 7:45 at night...

Like Grand Central at 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning?

i'll take my chances at GCT anytime...

that is SO ***ing typical of sterling...

Oh my goodness, Sterling just had yet another "It is high, it is far, it is...caught" call. Ugh. I love Sterling, but he needs new glasses.

Sterling might need to watch a monitor, which he usually doesn't do. He's become a punch-line for it.

yeah, you and i have a soft spot for the guy...i wouldn't want anyone else, but those can be maddening

We might need to have a telethon here at The Heartland for some binoculars to send Sterling.

Mussina just surrendered another homer to Jacobs to right. Yeeesh.

it is high....

as sterling says...mussina is really pitching well tonight...

They mentioned that Molina is in for Jorge this inning. That homer was HIS fault.

You know the game gets slow when Sterling and Waldman start talking Broadway.

we'll need some entertainment for the telethon...perhaps patti lupone doing gypsy for the guys...would it work? not so sure

NOW Sterling did it again, showing no excitement when Duncan made the catch to save a homer. Give my regards to Broadway, John.

so did shelley just make a catch? what the heck is going on?

No, I think the Heartland air guitar contest would go over better than that.

good idea

ok we're boarding dude...lata

I'm thinking of doing something from Twisted Sister. I'm going to start working on my perm now.

Take care Mike, bring back the W's.
